Protos '27 Ribera del Duero 2017
|Availability:||In stock (6)|
To commemorate Protos’ 90th anniversary and their first vintage awarded in 1929 Barcelona International Wine Exhibition, they recovered the first label to dress a very special wine, Protos´27.
The grapes sourced for this wine are from vines that were planted over 50 years ago. These vines are located in the Roa- La Horra – Anguix triangle, where the oldest plots of Ribera del Duero are planted.
2.4 acres average size plots located at 2,700 ft altitude with clayey soils with even chalky concretions.
Hand-picking harvest in 20 kg crates. Sorting table. Skin contact, cold maceration and fermentation (with selected indigenous yeasts) for 21 days at 77 ºF. The wine is then aged 16 months in new French oak barrels where fermentation took place. After another 12 months in bottle, the wine is released
The name Protos comes from the Greek work for “first.” While Protos has several peers in the upper echelons of cult Ribera del Duero, it is difficult to argue whether or not Protos is the region’s most iconic winery – “Ribera del Duero” was literally the winery’s brand name prior to them gifting the Ribera name to the rest of the region, allowing everyone to use it in order to properly create the Ribera del Duero appellation in 1982. The winery sits at the base of the symbolic Penafiel castle that identifies the region.
For the visitor Protos offers as dynamic an experience as they come – Walk in one direction and you can snake through miles and miles of underground cellars, walk in the other and you are in the stunning new winery space designed by famed architect Richard Rogers.
