Txakoli protected by the Denomination of Origin Bizkaiko Txakolina.
In 1989 various vine growers got together to renew the vitiviniculture activity that was historically so important socioeconomically in Bizkaia.
In 1995 they opened their first facilities in Muskiz, with a capacity for 25,000 litres and in 2002 the winery moved to Gernika, a privileged enclave of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
Mountainous slopes next to the Bay of Biscay give the winery its name and its most valuable heritage, 35 ha of vineyard.
The expression of the climate, the soil, the topography, the microclimate of each wine-growing plot, the planning and management of the vineyards, the use of a respectful and innovative wine-making criterion with the most authentic concept of a Designation of Origin has given the Itsasmendi Winery its own personality.
Located in Gernika, the Winery is like the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve to which it belongs: in permanent evolution, full of diversity, natural and complex.
The creation of great wines starts in the vineyard. Our project stands out precisely due to 35 ha of vineyard in 15 different plots, carefully selected by our technical team, which give us great biodiversity in the grapes selected.
A markedly Atlantic climate, the great geological and microclimatic diversity that lead to at least three different weeks of ripening and a wine-producing philosophy of maximum respect for the environment are the arguments for working in line with aspects of quality and sustainability.
The use of native varieties of a marked local nature, such as the Hondarrbi Zuri and the Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratier accentuate the wealth provided by Nature. Our main objective is to find the maximum wine-making potential of each small ecosystem created with the vineyards.
All of this allows us to create the extensive and innovative range of products, their personality and originality.
