In the Wachau's very own classification system, "Smaragd" is the top level, the region's best wines with the most alcohol, signature long corks, and the emerald lizard on the neck. Bergistal is a Smaragd blended from fruit from Martin's magnificent sites, some at nose-bleed altitudes for sizzling energy and minerality, other from lower sites for ripe tropical fruit and palate-coating richness. In 2020, the total blend the best we've tasted here yet.

Aromas of dusty pear, stone fruit, fresh lemon, salty stone and subtle white pepper. The texture is wonderful, dense and rich but also vivid and silky. The tangy pineapple, just squeezed lemon juice, spiced pear, fresh sweet pea and more white pepper flavors unfurl with air and linger nicely through a mouthwatering finish. The Austrian wine press has already rated this vintage 92-94 points and similar scores will come from others in due course. Lovely wine.
